Bejucal

San Felipe y Santiago de Bejucal, or simply Bejucal, is a municipality in the province of Havana in Cuba. It extends for 75km².  It was one of the cities that brought the first railroad built by Spain in America in colonial times and throughout Latin America.

The town is built on almost flat land in the north and reaches the foothills of Bejucal.  The hydrography is composed of several rivers that cross the area: the river Govea;  the main river valley that rises in the Sierra de Bejucal that after passing through the town of San Antonio de los Banos empties into Ariguanabo; Santa Barbara Avocado who receives the San Antonio de las Vegas and the Aguas Verdes empties into the marshes of the coast of Batabano.

Bejucal is comprised of several districts and capital is the city of San Felipe.  Bordered on the north by the municipality of Santiago de las Vegas, on the east by San Antonio de las Vegas and Batabano, on the south by the Health and west to San Antonio de los Banos.

The township of San Felipe de Bejucal was founded in 1713. In the eighteenth century it was part of the 31 jurisdictions in which the island was divided.  Until 1874 it was part of the municipality of the Isle of Pines. In that year, it formed a segregated town governance.

In the early twentieth century it separated and then in turn again united neighborhoods and Quivican Health. Between 1931 and 1943 Bejucal Delicias lost neighborhoods, and the people of Guiro Quivican Marrero formed the municipality of Quivican.
