Camaguey Architecture

Camaguey is composed of a central or historic center, where you can see ancient buildings with its narrow cobblestone streets in colonial style, and it has beautiful squares and churches of great historical value. For the care and commitment of its residents and local authorities, its historical center was declared in 2008 the Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The layout of Camaguey is the most asymmetric of all the villages founded by the Spanish in Cuba. According to tradition the labyrinthine layout of its narrow winding streets was chosen by the founders for the defense of the place. You can also appreciate, especially in Calle Independencia, the old tram rails.

This city, like any other of Cuba’s heritage, has teams of curators: in this case, a Historian’s Office, which among other tasks is concerned with the rescue of the values of the heritage of the town which has lasted more than 495 years.

Camaguey is the largest preserved colonial center of the country that offers visitors numerous buildings with significant architectural and historical values and cultural and interesting museums.

Examples of these tasks are the Plaza de San Juan de Dios, the del Carmen Bedoya, Agramonte-old Park Square, the birthplace of the hero Ignacio Agramonte, and other places. Located in the historic center are buildings with high architectural values. Values are noted for their Metropilitana Cathedral, where they worship the Virgin of Candelaria, the patroness of the city, the Parishes of Soledad, Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje, Santa Ana, the chapels of Mercy, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Carmen and San Juan de Dios, where Olallo Blessed Joseph and Valdes (Father Olallo) responded to thousands of Principe in the sole interest of bringing health to the people.

Camaguey outside of its historic center has a modern and fast transportation system, including Finlay Avenue, Central Road, the Avenue of Martyrs, the Ignacio Agramonte and a bypass over 20km long rings the city. Major modern buildings include the building Flavor, built in the ’50s and for many years was the highest in the interior, also in the development zones there has been built 26-story buildings and 12 to 18 plants in and around the Plaza of the Revolution.
