Esmeralda

Esmeralda is a municipality in the province of Camaguey. It was founded in 1928 and the borough has an area of 1227km², bordered by the municipalities of Boliva, Ciego de Avila and Carlos Manuel De Cespedes, Florida, Camaguey and Saw Cubitas.

It has a population of 31,936 and the area code is 32. Routes of communication are a link road leading to the main road and a 45km road. The North municipality is crossed by the northern railway line. The means of transport are buses to different destinations such as Camaguey and Florida.

There are also 2 rail services and the city offers many amenities such as post offices, funeral homes, shops dealing in foreign and domestic currency, a general hospital, a dental clinic, baseball stadium, restaurants, foreign currency exchange (CADECAS) a credit, trade and popular savings bank, maternity home, nursing home, primary and secondary schools, two kindergartens, a service station (ser-CUPET), 24 hour cafeteria called THE QUICK and a radio station called Radio Esmeralda.

The most important economic activities in this town are those derived from agriculture in sugar cane and other crops. The municipality can improve its economy for the future through the exploitation of tourism in Cayo Romano, an islet belonging to the city that is joined to the mainland by Esmeralda, Cuba.
