There is a humanist essence which serves to distinguish the Caribbean area, which undoubtedly stands out as a city of 735 km² with 15 municipalities and more than two million inhabitants. It was founded on November 16th 1519 by Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez de Cuellar. Its historic center was declared a World Heritage site by Unesco Toponimia.

The town of San Cristobal de La Habana, was founded on behalf of the Kings of Spain on 16th November 1519. Its name is a merger of the chosen name of the saint as patron and the name by which it was known in its early settlements: Havana. Although there are several hypotheses of the origin of this name, the most accepted hypothesis is of a Taino cacique called Habaguanex.

Other versions believe that corruption comes from the Taino word “savannah.” This turned into a current Spanish original meaning. Another theory comes from Gaven or haven, which means port or anchorage in the Germanic languages. It is also said to come from the Arawak word “abana” meaning “she is crazy” referring to the legend of an Indian called Guara.
