Havana Roads and Taxis

The city road network is quite extensive, and has broad avenues, main Havana Roads and Taxisstreets and major access roads to the city such as the National Highway, the Central Highway and the White Way. The road network has been under construction and enjoyed growth from the colonial era.

Other routes in the city are the Via Blanca, built in the Republican era for connecting Havana with Varadero and the area of La Habana del Este, is a major tourist center. The National Highway begun in the revolutionary period (after 1959) and has remained an unfinished product of the economic crisis of the 1990s, but now they have started construction again. This important road links Havana with the rest the country both to the west and the east.

Some city streets are part of its urban heritage such as Tacon Street, consisting of a single block with wooden floors, and located in front of the Palace of the Captains General. This street is named after Captain General Miguel Tacon and Rosique, who ordered the wooden floors for cars and horses that were walking past the Palace and did not awaken during nap time or bother him while working in their offices.

There are several official agencies such as Panataxi Taxi or Taxi Ok. For car rentals there is Rent a car (modern cars), and Grand Car (old cars). Bicitaxis called rickshaws are also very popular.
