Conga

The conga is a popular Cuban dance of African origin which has a syncopated congarhythm and is accompanied by drums.  It serves as a companion to the groups and carnivals originating from the festivities that made the black slaves.

In the instrumental part there are drums of various kinds such as bass drum, cowbells, frying pans and other metal objects.

At the beginning it was used as an element of political propaganda used by candidates in the pre-election period to move the masses after its rhythms and songs, which called for triumph.   “The dance is reduced to march to the beat of the rhythmic pattern, which in turn, highlights a syncopation that is emphasized when the dancers lift one leg slightly and hit the mark with a sharp movement of the body.”

The conga is the largest dance that has been recorded since the Super Conga Miami held on 8th Street on March 13th 1988. The line comprised of 119,986 people.

The conga is a singing and dance genre, which emphasizes the joy, rhythm and flavor of Cuban music.  It supports the musical carnival processions.  It originated in the festivities celebrating the African slaves during the colonial domination of Spain in Cuba.   The festivities took place on those occasions when the authorities allowed some distractions to the slaves.  The holiday of Habeas is mainly on Sundays and the Epiphany. It is a musical and social event filled with subordinated songs, touches of drums and fabulous choreography.  It is in contrast to ballroom dancing in that the bourgeoisie is created for your enjoyment.
