Another expression of African origin, located in the western country, is the secret male Abakua group, also known as naniguismo who emerged in the early twentieth century. In societies Abakua covered several local groups. There are centuries old temples in Cienfuegos, Palmira, and in several towns of Havana and Matanzas.

They unite families with large groups of priests, and more recently created the Yoruba Cultural Association of Cuba, which includes a number of santeros Babalawos or the cult IFA.

Another widespread religious expression in Cuban society is Spiritism.  The United States emerged in Europe and systematized a religious version of American pragmatism and philosophical empiricism.

It arrived in Cuba in the mid-twentieth century and began to diversify into several tracks, mixed with elements of African religions and Christianity, and with a strong reference to the everyday.  It also practiced Protestant Christianity, which arrived in the country with relative delay, hampered by colonial rules that protected the Catholic Church.

This profession of faith was established on the island along the first fifty years of the republic, supported by the U.S. missionary boards, from which the Cuban Protestantism reproduced the diversity of names typical of American society.

Other religious practices which are practiced include Judaism, including persons belonging to the Jewish community which has several synagogues. Groups of religious-philosophical-orientalists include the Theosophical Society and the Baha’i community.  In addition there are minority groups in yoga and Buddhism.  The Cuban Freemasonry has over 29,000 members enrolled in 314 Lodges throughout the territory.
