The main rivers in the eastern region and are the Toa and Cauto.   In this region during 2004 there was an uneven distribution of rainfall, extreme droughts and floods which could not be controlled. Additionally although not directly, several hurricanes and cyclones have affected the rain and have been increasing lately.   In 2006 and 2007, reservoirs, rivers and lakes have reached the limit of their capacity, providing water to most of the population.
This archipelago was submerged. In the Jurassic period in Cuba it was populated by a rich marine biodiversity in a strait between Laurasia and Gondwana. Cuba is an island of orogenic origin.   It has a great diversity of rocks and soils.  It has several submerged caves like the Eye of the Megane in Villa Clara, and the de Santo Tomas. The development of underwater stalactites and stalagmites shows that the area has been out of the water for just 10,000 years.
